Fico: I consider it a mistake that representatives of EU states ignored the celebrations in China

Peking/Bratislava – The Prime Minister of Slovakia, Robert Fico (Smer-SD), expressed regret in a video address on social media on Wednesday that the highest representatives of the EU member states were absent from the celebrations of the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II in Beijing, China. He described the event, which concluded with a military parade, as a “global event,” TASR reports.

“Chinese President Xi Jinping clearly indicated that the world faces a choice between peace and war and that China is willing to play a decisive role in a new global peace arrangement. In any case, it is true that even the most ideologically opposed to China cannot overlook the comprehensive expansion that China has achieved,” said Robert Fico at the beginning of his address.

He reiterated his regret that the highest representatives of the EU member states were absent from such a global event.

“If they thought that they could isolate the Chinese celebrations of victory in World War II this way, they miscalculated greatly, because if anyone was isolated today, it was the EU,” Fico said.

The Prime Minister added that although his visit to Beijing lasts only two days, “he is doing everything possible to make the most of the presence of heads of state from dozens of countries around the world.” In the video, Fico also touched on his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday (September 2), which he wants to inform Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky about at the planned meeting on Friday (September 5).

The Prime Minister informed the public that he informally talked with “about ten presidents” on Wednesday, discussing past working trips and negotiating future joint activities. He stated that he and Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko agreed that it would be appropriate to organize a joint meeting on the possibilities of economic cooperation. As part of the official program on Wednesday, Fico discussed with Vietnamese President Luong Cuong the preparation for the Prime Minister’s official visit to this Asian country, as well as with Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić about trade exchange, the planned World Expo 2026 in Serbia, and the situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The Prime Minister is scheduled for an official meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Vice President of China Han Zheng on Thursday (September 4) in Beijing. (September 3)
