Fico: Energy price compensations should concern 90 percent of households, we want to utilize EU funds

Bratislava – Energy prices in 2026 should remain unchanged for 90 percent of households. On the social network, Prime Minister of Slovakia Robert Fico (Smer-SD) stated on Sunday (August 3) that he would present such a proposal for compensation of gas and heat prices to the coalition and that he would ask the European Commission (EC) to utilize EU funds for this purpose.

The Prime Minister stated that the proposal arose from consultations with the Minister of Economy of Slovakia Denisa Saková (Hlas-SD), with whom he discussed alternatives for compensating heat and gas prices this week.

“We have resolved electricity for 2026,” reminded Robert Fico. He appreciated that the minister came up with a proposal for targeted compensation. “We agreed with the minister that we would present the government coalition with the option that the compensation for gas and heat prices for 2026 would apply to 90 percent of households,” the Prime Minister stated.

In the case that situations arise in the remaining part of households with higher incomes where compensation would also be appropriate, the Ministry of Economy would address such cases individually, according to the Prime Minister.

“If this proposal is politically approved by the coalition, energy prices would not increase for at least 90 percent of households in 2026,” he added. He warned that this would cost the state hundreds of millions of euros, which need to be found during ongoing consolidation.

He announced that for this reason, intensive negotiations with the European Commission are beginning regarding the use of EU funds for compensation. He reminded that the European Commission committed to seeking such options in connection with the approval of the 18th package of sanctions against Russia.

The Minister of Economy stated on the social network on Sunday afternoon that the ministry created a system during the preparation of the proposal that connects data from all registers of public administration, so that the provision of targeted assistance can be automated as much as possible.

“The goal is for approximately two million households not to have to visit offices in person and submit applications,” added Saková. (August 4)
