Fico asked Orbán to revive cooperation within the V4, which major players in the EU did not accept

Bratislava – Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán signed a memorandum on cross-border development between Slovakia and Hungary on Monday. They did so at the government office in Bratislava. Fico also urged Orbán to do everything possible to revive this regional cooperation in the format of the Visegrad Group (V4), which, according to him, “has not been accepted by the big players in the European Union.” This is reported by TASR.

The official visit, according to Fico, confirmed the above-standard friendly relations between the countries, but also the personal relations between them. He claims that there are currently no open political issues that would disturb the countries. In case of emergency, the prime ministers are, according to him, ready to sit down and resolve any disputes.

“Currently, we live in a system of the best Slovak-Hungarian relations of all time. I would also confirm at this moment that Slovakia and Slovaks can always rely on us, and we Hungarians also rely on Slovakia, because our two countries have a whole range of common interests,” Orbán noted.

Fico stated that he and Orbán exchanged information in the field of nuclear energy, where Slovakia is very advanced, as today a significant part of the electricity consumed by the country is produced in domestic nuclear power plants.

“I am pleased that there is cooperation between renowned Slovak companies in this area and renowned Hungarian companies on projects of this type being implemented in Hungary,” Fico said.

He also pointed out that from July 1, Hungary will become the presiding country of the Visegrad Group. In this context, he asked Orbán to do everything possible to revive this regional cooperation.

“Cooperation within the V4 has been deliberately destroyed and liquidated because the big players in the European Union did not accept the existence of regional cooperation in the EU that represented more than 60 million inhabitants and ensured that these four countries could assert their own interests,” noted the Prime Minister of Slovakia. He promised Orbán that he would support him in his efforts.

Fico also appreciated the sovereign positions of the Hungarian government, as well as Orbán, which he often presents in protecting Hungarian national interests in the European Union.

“As the Prime Minister of Slovakia, I will never agree to anyone in the EU being punished for sovereign positions. I will never agree to any procedures that would lead to punishing those who do exactly what they promised to their own voters, who act sovereignly and defend their own national interests,” noted the Slovak Prime Minister.

The prime ministers agreed on the need for an immediate end to the war in Ukraine. They reject all military operations aimed at prolonging the war. Together, they believe that the extraordinary activity of the American administration will lead to good results. The Hungarian Prime Minister criticized Ukraine for blocking gas supplies. He does not see this as a path to the future. He believes that this will make it very difficult for Ukraine to approach the EU. (April 28)
