Fajon confirmed the EU’s interest in deepening partnership with Benin

Cotonou – The Slovene Foreign Minister Tanja Fajon emphasized during her visit to Benin on Monday that the EU recognizes and supports the potential of this African country to decisively continue its development, as the union needs stable partners in the West African region. As Fajon stated, who is in Benin on behalf of the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs Josep Borrell, she assured Benin’s Foreign Minister Olushegun Bakari of the union’s support in the fight against terrorism and organized crime.
“We recognize and support Benin’s potential to decisively continue its development, as we need stable partners in the West African region to confront the rising security risks from the increasingly restless Sahel,” Fajon said. In addition to meeting with the Foreign Minister, Fajon held a series of talks with other representatives of the Beninese government and civil society, discussing Benin’s plans for modernization and how the EU can contribute to its further development.
She also visited two of the projects through which the EU is present in the country under the Global Gateway initiative: the modernization of the port in Cotonou with the help of the port in Antwerp, Belgium, and the youth co-creating the Seme City project – a regional center for innovation, education, and entrepreneurship.
