Exclusive briefing with the incoming Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the EU
The Republic of Cyprus will take over the rotating Presidency of the Council of the European Union on January 1, 2026. In a background briefing for the European Newsroom (enr) at the Permanent Representation of Cyprus to the EU in Brussels, journalists learned first-hand about the upcoming working programme of the presidency.
Correspondents from the European Newsroom’s member agencies had an exclusive opportunity to speak to a team of spokespersons and press officers, including Spokesperson Maria Phanti (Spokesperson Coreper II / Head of Press Office) and Berna Berberoglu (Spokesperson Coreper I).
Phanti and Berberoglu presented the presidency’s key themes and focus areas, followed by a Q&A on a range of topics relevant to the participating news agencies.
The briefing was attended by 20 journalists from across the continent – from Greece to Denmark and from Portugal to Poland.
