EU tops tested for PFAS

Strasbourg – Environment Commissioner Jessika Roswall and other participants at the EU’s environment ministers’ meeting in Aalborg, Denmark, on Thursday and Friday will be tested to see how much PFAS chemicals they have in their bodies.

“A study in the Netherlands has shown that the entire population of the Netherlands has various types of PFAS in their blood. And almost everyone has too much PFAS,” noted Roswall at a press conference in Strasbourg on Tuesday, during the presentation of a new action plan for the chemical industry.

The action plan includes a promise to propose how the EU’s chemical legislation, Reach, should be updated before the end of the year. Additionally, a number of simplifications are promised, both now and later, to reduce bureaucracy and speed up permitting processes.

However, the trade union Etuc is critical and accuses the commission of sacrificing workers’ health for corporate profits.
