EU Summit: the 2040 climate goal is on the agenda

Brussels – The subject of the European climate target for 2040 could be on the agenda for dinner on Thursday evening among the heads of state and government, according to European sources.
After months of uncertainty, the European Commission is indeed preparing to present its quantified proposal for reducing CO2 emissions by 2040 next Wednesday.
The European executive could maintain its goal of reducing emissions by 90% by 2040 compared to 1990. But with “flexibilities” for member states. Perhaps by taking into account the purchase of international carbon credits and funding virtuous projects outside of Europe.
Some states like Italy, the Czech Republic, or Hungary contest the targeted 90% reduction.
For its part, France has repeatedly criticized the method employed by the Commission. The French government accuses it of setting a very ambitious target without specifying how to achieve it.
Paris demands guarantees on the decarbonization of industry and would like Brussels to further support nuclear energy. (June 26, 2025)
