EU strengthens border security: New cadets completed training in BiH with European support

Sarajevo (Fena) – With the support of the European Union, 142 cadets of the Border Police of Bosnia and Herzegovina successfully completed their training as part of the 12th generation of cadets of this institution. The demanding seven-month training, which included theoretical and practical components in three phases, was carried out with financial assistance from the EU amounting to over 500,000 euros. This once again confirmed the European Union’s key role in strengthening the capacities of the security structures of BiH.

Attending the ceremony, the head of the EU Delegation and the EU Special Representative in Bosnia and Herzegovina Luigi Soreca said that the new members of the Border Police play a key role.

– You will contribute to the fight against irregular migration and smuggling, making the borders of Bosnia and Herzegovina safer and thereby strengthening our collective European security. Managing migration requires a comprehensive approach that encompasses complex humanitarian and security aspects. The EU will continue to support the Ministry of Security and Bosnia and Herzegovina as a whole in building a sustainable migration management system – this is not an easy task and requires resources, political will, and a long-term vision. You can count on the EU to remain a reliable and consistent partner – said Soreca.

The EU also financed the training of 150 cadets who were part of the 11th generation. Over the past seven years, the EU has provided more than eight million euros to strengthen the capacities of the Border Police of Bosnia and Herzegovina, including the procurement of specialized equipment, vehicles, communication systems, and IT infrastructure. This investment has directly improved the operational readiness and professionalism of border management institutions across the country.

The European Union, in cooperation with the International Organization for Migration (IOM), will continue to support the strengthening of migration and border management systems in Bosnia and Herzegovina through the procurement of equipment, capacity building, and providing expert assistance to the Ministry of Security, the Foreigners’ Affairs Service, the Border Police, and the Asylum Sector, the Directorate for Coordination of Police Bodies in Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as other institutions and agencies responsible for this sector.
