EU reinstates sanctions on Iran

Brussels (dpa) – The EU is reinstating suspended sanctions following the failed rescue attempts for the nuclear agreement with Iran. The punitive measures include actions that prevent Iranian cargo planes from accessing EU airports, as well as a ban on the maintenance and repair of Iranian cargo planes or ships transporting certain materials or goods, as communicated by the Council of Member States after a corresponding decision.
Additionally, the import, acquisition, and transport of crude oil, oil products, and natural gas are prohibited, as well as trade in certain software products, energy technology, ship equipment, precious metals, and diamonds.
Entry bans and asset freezes are being reintroduced against individuals associated with the Iranian nuclear program. Similar measures apply to companies and organizations.
EU implements agreements from New York
With the reintroduction of sanctions, the EU is responding to the expiration of the deadline set by Germany, the United Kingdom, and France to salvage the international nuclear agreement with Iran. As a result, UN sanction rules that are also binding for the EU have come back into effect over the weekend.
The nuclear agreement from 2015 was intended to impose restrictions on Iran’s nuclear program to exclude the construction of a nuclear bomb. In return, sanctions relief was negotiated. Since Iran has not adhered to its obligations, international punitive measures are now being reinstated.
These complement the sanctions that the EU has imposed due to violations of human rights and military support for Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, or that were not lifted as part of the nuclear sanctions relief. This also includes a weapons embargo. (September 29)
