EU Parliament: Iran must immediately release Djalali

Strasbourg – The EU Parliament demands by a large majority that Iran immediately releases the imprisoned Swedish-Iranian researcher Ahmadreza Djalali.
The resolution, which was passed with 486 votes in favor and 8 against, is indeed non-binding, but aims to put further pressure on Iran.
“Sweden and the EU must do more to pressure Iran to abolish the death penalty and stop imprisoning dissenters,” says Swedish member Alice Bah Kuhnke, representing the Green Party, in a statement.
Ahmadreza Djalali was imprisoned in Iran in 2016 when he was in the country to participate in a seminar on disaster medicine. He has since been sentenced to death on espionage charges that he has always denied. When Sweden and Iran carried out a controversial prisoner exchange in 2024, he was left behind in the notorious Evin prison.
