EU: €530 million fine on TikTok for failure to protect users’ personal data

Unable to guarantee that the personal data of European users is protected both in China and in Europe, mainly against potential access by the Beijing authorities, TikTok was fined 530 million euros.

During the investigation conducted on behalf of the European Union by the Irish Data Protection Authority, the electronic platform, owned by a Chinese group, admitted that it “hosts” personal data of Europeans in China, a fact it had denied until now.

The powerful social network with 1.5 billion users is owned by ByteDance. It has been under scrutiny by governments of Western countries for years, which suspect that it has ties to Beijing, hence the fears of using users’ personal data for espionage and propaganda purposes. (2/5/25)
