Draghi warns of stagnation in the EU due to strict AI regulations

Rome (APA) – The European Union risks falling behind in the field of artificial intelligence – among other things due to the regulations it has imposed on the development of AI. This warning was issued by former President of the European Central Bank and former Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi on Monday at the opening of the academic year at the Polytechnic University of Milan.

“If we do not close the gap compared to other countries and do not adopt these technologies on a large scale, Europe risks a future of stagnation – with all the associated consequences,” said the 78-year-old Draghi.

“Quickly Adjust Rules”

“Rules must be quickly adjusted as soon as concrete insights about risks and benefits are available. This is exactly where Europe has come to a standstill,” he added, referring to regulations in the field of new technologies, particularly in artificial intelligence. “We have treated initial and preliminary assessments as if they were established lessons, and enshrined them in laws that are extremely difficult to change,” criticized the native Roman.

Draghi emphasized that the EU could receive a significant economic boost through the introduction of AI. “If AI development proceeds similarly to digital development in the USA, there could be a boost of nearly 0.8 percent of GDP per year,” he said. (1.12.2025)
