“Do not back down” on 100% electric cars by 2035: 150 companies call on Brussels

Paris – As the automotive industry challenges the ban on the sale of thermal vehicles starting in 2035, and with four days to go before a meeting in Brussels on the future of the sector, more than 150 companies are sending “a clear message” to the President of the Commission Ursula von der Leyen: “Hold firm, do not back down. Maintain the goal” of zero emissions by 2035.
The letter is signed by electric vehicle manufacturers (Volvo, Polestar), battery manufacturers based in Europe (Verkor, Samsung, LG Energy), charging operators (Fastned, Ionity, Alpitronic), material suppliers (Talga, Orano, Rock Tech Lithium), and network managers (Iberdrola, EDP).
The ban on the sale of new gasoline or diesel cars, including hybrids, in the EU starting in 2035 has been contested for several months by some manufacturers, faced with sluggish sales of electric models, rising Chinese competition, American tariffs, and falling global profits. (September 8, 2025)
