Christine Lagarde: Joining the Eurozone will provide Bulgaria with stability
Frankfurt am Main – Joining the eurozone will provide Bulgaria with stability as part of the currency area, said the President of the European Central Bank (ECB) Christine Lagarde in response to a question from BTA at the press conference following the two-day ECB meeting on interest rate determination.
The main task of the ECB is to maintain price stability in the medium term, which will also benefit Bulgaria, Lagarde explained. According to her, adopting the euro will bring significant benefits to Bulgaria, but proper management of the transition to the new currency is also important.
Now Bulgaria will be part of a market with 350 million consumers, which will open new opportunities for investment and growth, said ECB President Christine Lagarde.
She expressed her satisfaction that Bulgaria will become part of the common European currency area and welcomed the appointment of the Governor of the Bulgarian National Bank Dimitar Radev to the ECB Governing Council as an observer until the country’s actual membership on January 1.
Bulgaria will have a vote, just like any other country in the eurozone, and will be able to actively participate in discussions on the monetary policy of the European Central Bank, Lagarde said.
The President of the ECB believes that Bulgaria will benefit from the advantages of the euro and will be able to continue developing its economy in a stable and predictable monetary environment.
Bulgaria will officially adopt the euro and will be the 21st member of the eurozone from January 1, 2026 – 19 years after the country’s accession to the European Union. The EU Council unanimously voted on July 8 this year on the final decisions related to the adoption of the euro in Bulgaria. With this, the procedure was completed, after earlier that same day the European Parliament also approved by a large majority the report on the introduction of the single European currency by Bulgaria.
