Can Powell’s Power Drive WI Victory Again?
West Indies started their T20I series with Pakistan by securing the first match of the three-match series with Bangladesh with a victory of 16 runs in the first match at the Bir Sreshtho Flight Lieutenant Matiur Rahman Stadium.
It was the defining moment of the game brought by Rovman Powell, who had 44 off 28 balls, but that moment was underlined by four sixes, which reversed the fortunes of the innings in its early stages. An 83-run partnership was conceived by Powell, who came in at the end with a steady 46, with captain Shai Hope, and this was crucial to the West Indies.
The visitors received a good start by openers Alick Athanaze and Brandon King earlier in the innings adding 59 runs before Athanaze was hit by 34. King was next with 33, and West Indies had 82/3 when losing three wickets left him. The counterattack of Powell and Hope stabilised the innings and enhanced the scoring pace, taking the team total to 165/3 in 20 overs.
With West Indies bowlers dominating their attack, Bangladesh, with a target of 166, did not keep up with their attack. Jason Holder and Jayden Seales were on a rampage with three wickets each, and Akeal Hosein chipped in with two key scalps.
With this win, West Indies took a premature lead of 1-0 in the series. Powell played a game-changer role in T20 cricket, and this is indicated by the fact that he won the Player of the Match award for his match-winning cameo. The second T20I is another high-voltage game on Wednesday at the same venue, where both teams will be keen on changing tactics.
