SOFIA/KYIV – Bulgaria is among the strongest and most active supporters of Ukraine’s European integration, based on the principle of its own merits. We are ready to assist Kyiv on the European path by sharing valuable experience in the integration process. This was stated by Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov during a video conference call with Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko, the press service of the Council of Ministers reported.

Prime Minister Zhelyazkov welcomed Ukraine’s strong commitment to key reforms related to the European Union (EU), especially in the context of the current geopolitical security challenges and the ongoing full-scale Russian aggression.

Bulgaria firmly believes that Ukraine’s future is in the EU, and European integration is a guarantee of prosperity for the entire region, noted Zhelyazkov.

Bulgaria supports the decision to open the first negotiation cluster, emphasized Bulgarian Prime Minister Zhelyazkov, highlighting the importance of the Ukrainian action plan regarding national minorities, considering it an indispensable component for opening the first negotiation chapter.

Rosen Zhelyazkov confirmed Bulgaria’s unwavering support for Ukraine in the context of the war. He noted that the Bulgarian government welcomes all efforts to achieve a lasting solution, including through the commitment of the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump to end the full-scale aggression of Russia against Ukraine.

Negotiations should be based on the principles of justice, sovereignty, and security guarantees, ensuring that peace is not just the absence of war, but a foundation for long-term stability, security, and prosperity for Europe and Ukraine, stated Rosen Zhelyazkov.

He emphasized Bulgaria’s readiness to engage in the post-war recovery, reconstruction, and reform process in Ukraine. During the meeting, issues related to regional energy security and transport connectivity were also discussed.

Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov participated on August 19 in a video conference meeting of the heads of state and government of EU member states, where the outcomes of the meeting in Washington regarding Ukraine were discussed. Security guarantees for Ukraine should include sustainable support from both European and Euro-Atlantic partners, stated Zhelyazkov. Bulgaria, together with our EU partners and NATO allies, is ready to contribute to achieving a framework for a just and lasting peace, the Prime Minister further stated. (20.08.2025)
