Brussels criticizes Beijing’s ‘clearly disappointing’ climate target

The European Union criticized China’s “clearly disappointing” climate target, which committed to reducing its net greenhouse gas emissions by 7% to 10% by 2035.

This target “falls significantly short of what we consider both feasible and necessary. This level of ambition is clearly disappointing,” said the European Commissioner for Climate, Wopke Hoekstra, in a statement released to the press.

China accounts for nearly 30% of global greenhouse gas emissions.

In a video message released on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York, Chinese President Xi Jinping himself revealed the country’s climate target yesterday, Wednesday.

He pledged that China would reduce its net greenhouse gas emissions by 7% to 10% by 2035 compared to the highest level of these emissions that can be recorded even this year, “while making every effort to do better.”

Almost all observers agree that these targets are very low, but China may exceed them thanks to the development of its so-called “clean” technologies.

To align with the goal of limiting the rise in global temperatures by the end of the century to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, Beijing must reduce its emissions by about 30% within 10 years compared to 2023 levels. (25/9/25)
