Babar Azam’s BBL Struggles Continue
Pakistan star batter Babar Azam suffered through another poor performance in the currently running Big Bash league (BBL) 15 as the batter failed to do well with the bat on Friday. The ex-Pakistan captain, who also plays on behalf of Sydney Sixers, was sacked with two paltry runs during a vital match against Melbourne stars at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG).
Tom Curran was an all-rounder in England whose off-season discipline and late out-swing brought Babar undone. The right hander did not hit the three initial deliveries, all of which fell safely into the wicketkeeper. Curran made a sharp late swing on the fifth ball and Babar was pushed into an edge which went straight to the slip to Glenn Maxwell who made an easy catch. There were seven balls a total that Babar walked back to the pavilion.
It was the third occasion Babar has been dispatched out of the tournament because of a single digit score. It was also his first BBL appearance that finished with a two off five against Perth Scorchers, which was playing as a losing team on behalf of Sydney Sixers. During his second visit to play Adelaide Strikers, he could only score nine runs out of 11 balls including a boundary as the Sixers went on losing.
But some progress was made in the third game as Babar scored his first BBL fifty. He hit 58 runs, out of 42 deliveries, hitting five fours and two sixes and was instrumental in ensuring that Sydney Sixers won the first match of the season.
The 31 year old made a comeback to T20 internationals after a hiatus since December 2024. The first three games of his comeback against South Africa drew a duck, 11 and an amazing 68. Babar has had 127 runs in five matches in the T20I tri-series with a strike rate of 112.38 with one half-century meaning that he has shown flashes of form despite his current poor consistency.
