Automobile: EU countries approve recycled plastic targets

Brussels – The environment ministers of the 27 member states, meeting on Tuesday in Luxembourg, approved a proposal from the European Commission aimed at ensuring that at least 25% of the plastic used in cars comes from recycling.
This regulation “reduces waste, limits our dependence on imported critical raw materials, and places our automotive industry at the heart of the circular economy,” said Paulina Hennig-Kloska, the Environment Minister of Poland, which holds the rotating presidency of the EU Council.
The manufacturing of vehicles is among the most resource-intensive industries in Europe. It accounts for 10% of total plastic consumption, according to the Commission.
According to the approach adopted by the Council, the body that brings together the 27 member states, manufacturers will have to ensure that 15% of the plastic used in new vehicles is recycled within six years of the regulation coming into force. This target will increase to 20% after eight years, and then to 25% after ten years. (June 18, 2025)
