Albares asks Kallas to discuss the “hunger situation” in Gaza at the next CAE

Madrid – The Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, José Manuel Albares, has requested in a letter to the EU High Representative for Foreign Policy, Kaja Kallas, that the “situation of famine” in the Gaza Strip due to the Israeli blockade on the entry of aid be included in the upcoming meeting of the Council of Foreign Affairs, which will be held on May 20.

The head of diplomacy had already hinted the day before, during his appearance before the Senate Foreign Affairs Committee, that he would send this letter. In both this intervention and the one he made in the morning before the corresponding committee in Congress, he was very critical of the situation in Gaza.

“The situation in Gaza is unacceptable, as well as inhumane,” he stated in the Upper House, denouncing that the blockade imposed by Israel on the entry of humanitarian aid “has caused famine.” “The urgent entry of food is necessary to save lives,” he demanded.

According to diplomatic sources speaking to Europa Press, in his letter Albares expresses the same sentiment, warning that “many lives of innocent civilians, of thousands of children, are at stake.”

To request that this issue be included in the next meeting of EU foreign ministers — the Twenty-Seven are gathering this Wednesday and Thursday in Warsaw, but it is an informal meeting — he argues that “Europe is a beacon for the world in defense of International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights.”

The EU must join forces to alleviate the famine in Gaza

Therefore, Europeans must “join forces to alleviate the famine in Gaza, to ensure that humanitarian aid resumes and to prevent the death of more innocent civilians,” the minister asserts, according to the aforementioned sources.

Albares considers it “vital” that he and his EU colleagues address this issue in the next Council of Foreign Affairs and that they join forces to alleviate it, and he hopes to count on Kallas‘ collaboration to have it included in the agenda of topics to be discussed. (May 6)
