Ads or tax money? US journalists discuss media finances at the European Newsroom

Eleven US journalists are visiting Brussels and Germany as part of an exchange programme organised by the RIAS Berlin Commission. This commission organises trips several times a year primarily for radio and television journalists from the US and Germany. The goal is to better understand the media in the respective countries and the topics that particularly concern them.
In Brussels, the journalists from media outlets such as The Texas Newsroom, NBC 6 News, Spectrum News, WXVU and KRGV – Noticias RGV visited the enr office to learn more about how the project coordinates the work of its 23 member agencies. They were accompanied by Christoph Jumpelt, the Executive Director of the RIAS Berlin Commission.
Tim Kohnen and Ivonne Marschall presented the work of the enr project at the Residence Palace, explaining the benefits for the participating agencies, such as joint interviews with leading representatives of the EU. The European and American journalists quickly entered into lively discussions about media freedom, the pitfalls of public funding versus dependencies on private owners, as well as the different challenges reporters face on either side of the Atlantic.
After their stay in Brussels, the group travelled on to Germany to visit media outlets in Cologne, Berlin and Leipzig.
