A European Commissioner describes the situation in Gaza as “genocide”, laments the inaction of the 27

Paris – The Commissioner for Competition and Vice-President of the Commission in charge of the Clean, Fair, and Competitive Transition, Teresa Ribera, stated on Thursday that “the genocide in Gaza highlights Europe’s inability to act and speak with one voice, even as protests spread across European cities,” during a speech at the Sciences Po Paris graduate school.

The Twenty-Seven have been particularly divided on the stance to adopt towards Israel since the beginning of its war in Gaza against Hamas, in response to the unprecedented attack carried out on October 7, 2023, on Israeli soil by this Palestinian Islamist movement.

Several countries, including Germany, insist on Israel’s right to defend itself, in accordance with international law, while others, like Spain, have been denouncing a “genocide” against the Palestinians in Gaza for several months.

The Commission had proposed suspending certain European funding for Israeli start-ups. But this decision has not yet received the green light from the member states. (September 4, 2025)
