Government to look at banning flammable cladding after fury over Grenfell review

The Government will look at banning flammable cladding after a furious backlash whenthereview into the Grenfell Tower fire failed to recommend the move.

Housing Secretary James Brokenshiresaid the cladding blamed for the spread of the fire in the West London tower block was was “unlawful” and “should not have been used”, but said he had listened to calls from campaigners to ban all combustible materials.

His intervention came after a review of building regulations by Dame Judith Hackittwas branded a “whitewash” for failing to recommend an outright ban.

Mr Brokenshire told MPs: Having listened carefully to concerns, the Government will consult on banning the use of combustible materials and cladding systems on high-rise residential buildings.
